This dinghy sailing course is the second stage of the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme and is great way build on your skills gained on the level 1 course. It is opened to all children from 8 to 16 years of age who hold the RYA Youth Sailing Level 1 certificate.
Tuition is given by trained and qualified RYA dinghy instructors with an emphasis on safety and fun! There will be Safety Powerboats on the water at all times to ensure your safety afloat.
What will I learn?
This course is about obtaining a range of sailing skills and knowledge to help you become a confident sailor. The main elements of the course include building basic sailing skills, rope work and collision avoidance. At the end of the course you'll be able to tack and control boat speed and understand the basic principles of sailing.
What kit do I need?
If you have your own buoyancy aid please bring this along. If not, we are happy to lend you one free of charge. Wet suits are strongly recommended, especially in spring and autumn. Unfortunately the club does not have any wet suits available for loan. Sailing boots or neoprene beach shoes need to be worn (or trainers that you don't mind getting wet). Crocs or similar are not suitable as they tend to be too slippy and fall off feet too easily. Otley Sailing Club provide the boats :-)
You also need your RYA Youth Sailing Scheme Logbook. This tracks your progression through the whole RYA training scheme and is a place to stick your certificates.
When is the course?
The course is split over 2 half days - Sunday 13th May 2018 AND Sunday 20th May. It starts at 9:00am and finishes at 12:30pm. However, please be down at the club house by 8:45am so you have time to sign-in and get kitted-up so you will be ready to start at 9:00am. Please note that you must be able to attend both sessions.
What qualification do I get?
On successful completion of this course you will be awarded the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme Level 2 certificate.
How much is the course?
The course is £15 for members of Otley Sailing Club and £30 for non-members. This is non-refundable.
What can I do after this course?
On successful completion of this course, you may enrol on the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme Level 3 course.
